Other Wallpaper Project

I just realized I never posted my other finished wallpaper for digital printmaking. It's a solar system that tiles both vertically and horizontally. I printed it 4-up on 72x24 inch paper, but I'd rather have printed it at the right size. It's an Illustrator document, so it's easy to scale.

I did have a minor problem with printing. Mars wasn't right up against the edge, so I had a very small blue line going right through its middle.

Wallpaper Project

Here's a wallpaper I made for Type 3. We were given two letters and had to create a client. The two letters had to be in the clients name so it could be an initial. We then had to make a logo using these two letters that made sense with the client type that we had.

My letters were GG so I created a company called Geek/Grove that sells propeller beanie caps. The logo looks like a propeller. Once the logo was done, we had to repeat it to make a pattern. Eventually, I settled on a pattern that looked like a lot of hats with turning propellers. I really like it.

Propaganda Posters

Did these for Form&Comm 3. We had to pick four emotions and base images off of them. I decided to use propaganda poster as the style, going for a kind of neopropagana with a nostalgic cut-paper feel.

Typeface Process

Here's a little work on my typeface. There's a few sketches, followed by a screenshot of what I've got now. The M still needs work.

Making icons make sense...

The weird things about humans is some icons make way more sense than others. It's not for any particular reason, but sometimes they DO. Hope these do. I went through a few variations of these for before settling.

Form and Comm process

Close to being done!

Form and Comm Inspiration

Awesome use of color and layout. That text in the middle is brilliant.

Final Posters

Here's two of my completed posters. I much prefer the grid one. Kavinsky, the artist, works with samples from 1980s-1990s videos, and creates a very '80s police feel to his work. I tried to emulate that in the grid poster by using the colors that Kavinsky does in his illustrate avatar and typefaces common in 1980's design.

Inspiration Post!

Awesome 1960's style poster design. Eric Tan has the apparent dream job of working for Pixar and doing exactly what he loves - making awesome 1960's style posters.

Mini-book

Here's a page from my mini-book. I'm planning on adding a texture to the background and changing the colors a bit, but I've got the basic layout for one. I'm also thinking about knocking out the photo of the band so they're just white. I need a lighter color instead of dark, I think. I've got a similar thing going on here I want to emulate on the other pages, but with a lighter color:

Avatar vs. Papyrus

I saw Avatar about three months ago, and Papyrus bothered me. It wasn't until a few days ago that I actually compared the title typeface with Papyrus and noticed they were different.

Papyrus is pink. For some reason, and I'm sure more than a few artists involved with this movie fought it, but Cameron's team used Papyrus as a base, but changes the widths and strokes. This is especially evident in this screenshot:

You can see the "pits" in the letter are identacle, the stroke has just been widened.

I just wish it was something else.

Heads of State City Posters

Many of you know I'm doing a daily poster series focused on Lost. It's made me more interested in posters and poster design, and I ran across these very simple, awesome posters yesterday.

They take an iconic part of the city and simplify it, and they're beautiful. It's something I'm trying to do for my Lost posters, so it's very inspirational. I think NYC is my favorite.

A Bit of Poster Process

I've put together two gifs so you can see the very first version I put together on my computer, which I've already posted previously. Here though, they're compared with my final that will be presented on Monday.

The few changes for the first one were mainly just positioning elements and hierarchy, but I also added some coffee stains for texture an "grunge." See for yourself!

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

The other one had more substantial changes. At first I had used rings of gouche to paint the Who logo, but I didn't like it much so I painted the new logo in Photoshop and imported it. I also changed the typeface from Helvetica to Univers 45. This gives a much more "airy" feel than the heavier Helvetica.

Inspiration Post!

Here's a few things I've enjoyed over the last week. First off, art related, graffiti scrubbing. It's actually cleaning, because the artists remove the dirt in only specific areas to show pictures, instead of painting on the walls. There's a few photos where this is done in Africa here:

http://www.inhabitat.com/2010/03/10/reverse-graffiti-south-african-artists-tag-walls-by-scrubbing-them-clean/

Another fun thing I saw this week was accurate movie posters, from College Humor. It's a great idea, and something I wish I'd thought of. The only really inaccurate one is District 9, which is, in fact, about aliens. But with transparent symbolism.

Lastly, an RBG lamp that I kind of wish I could have.

Who poster number 2

Just threw this together. I'm probably redoing the painted part.

Dilatational grid process

Some sketches and a early composition of poster one. Lots of work needed, obviously, a bit more energy in the text, I think. I'm pretty content with the sketch, though.

Radial Poster 1

Here's my first attempt at a radial poster layout. I've found that doing posters horizontally is much easier with this grid system. It lends itself to readability. I used a splatter brush to create the effects on the left with pure magenta. The backings of the white letters are pure cyan and yellow. Please let me know what you'd change!

Type Posters, Week 1

Here's my two type posters. I don't have much to say about them. The second one might look weird, but that's because it has such thin lines. Not because it's terrible.

But it might be terrible.

The Birds and the Beasts Posters

I found these fantastic posters on ffffound. This shop has some great design but my favorite are their typographic posters.

300&65 Ampersands

I ran across this great site for lovers of typography a few weeks ago and I've been following pretty closely since. It's called 300&65 Ampersands. The blogger posts one new ampersands every day, with a link to the foundry so you can buy it if you'd like to. Here's a few of my favorites:

I'd love to see these made into a day calendar or a wall poster. They're fantastic.
